This is the oldest (erected in 1689) and largest (1.54 meters tall) of the hamlet shisa stone lions in Okinawa. Bullet holes, scars from the Battle of Okinawa, can still be seen on the statue in several places. There is a famous photograph of American troops hiding behind this shisa during their advance.
