Japan’s southernmost inhabited island. There is a “Japan’s Southernmost Point” monument there. The Southern Cross can be seen from this point and there is a tower for observing the starry skies. With no habu snakes in the area, there are many stone walls (a favorite hiding place for these venomous snakes) to be seen in the hamlet, and the island retains a strong air of traditional Okinawa.
