A castle ruin built on a hill located at the base of the Katsuren Peninsula in the central part of the main island of Okinawa.
The ruins of Katsuren Castle are famous as the residence of Amawari, a powerful local castle lord who resisted the Ryukyu Kingdom in the process of its stabilization.
In 2000, the Katsuren Castle Ruins were registered as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu".
Katsuren Castle is said to be an impregnable castle built on a natural cliff, but the graceful curves of the castle walls give a sense of artistic beauty.
It is one of the most scenic spots in Okinawa where you can see the Pacific Ocean shining in cobalt blue when you climb to the top.
